Top 7 Sales Tips

A Tomizone is a great way to securely share your broadband connection and make money out of thin air! These top 7 tips have been designed so you can be providing the best possible service for people that want to use your Tomizone and maximise your revenue opportunity.

Please note that some countries may have specific regulations governing wireless telecommunications (eg requiring licensing). As Tomizones can be set up in any country, it is impractical for us to provide and monitor this information. By becoming a Tomizone Provider you are accepting our Terms and Conditions, in particular clause 4: "The Provider acknowledges that it shall be responsible for compliance of all laws and regulations relating to its provision of Hotspots (including any licenses to operate equipment)". Tomizone does not accept any responsibility or liability for any breaches which may arise.

1: Promote Promote Promote

Using subtle promotional tools such as window stickers and table cards, you can promote your Tomizone at the venue where you are. If you plan to put up a Tomizone in a cafe, accommodation unit or hotel, place in-room instructions and promotional cards around.

If you have a Tomizone around a popular site, then ask permission from likely shop owners to see if you can put a simple Tomizone Window Sticker in place. A window sticker should be at around shoulder height and be easily visible. You may want some smaller stickers from the Tomizone Promotional Items to put on smaller items such as counter cash registers or shaker stands.

Other promotional devices such as neon signs, posters and postcards are useful for also showing people that you have "Internet Here" - the key words to success!

2: Location is key

Wherever you put your Tomizone, you've already made an assumption that people will use it because they are around the area of where you are! As an example, here are some high traffic areas to get you thinking:

  • Got a Café or you live near one? Put the Tomizone above, across the road or next door. Café's attract laptop users all the time. If you own the café, refer to tip 1 above.
  • Transport hubs such as bus, tram and train stations, ferry terminals, airports or airfields are popular. Society is moving toward using down time at these venues as up time to stay connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi.
  • Hotels, Motels, Backpacker accommodations attract a very high use customer segment. If you own the establishment, you should also check out our extra coverage tips to provide in-room access via cable or wireless.
  • Camping Grounds are very popular in the high season. Like hotels, wi-fi coverage with a Tomizone can be quite useful. You should also check out our extra coverage tips.
  • Marinas are a very lucrative venue to put up a Tomizone. International vessels that visit the marina need Internet coverage. Furthermore, there are many support industries such as clubs and cafés that support marina's on the shoreline. To cover the open area of a marina with wi-fi is relatively straight forward for a skilled Tomizone owner to do. You'll need to check our extra coverage tips.
  • Student Campus and Fraternity Houses make an excellent point in some cities where this type of casual, safe wi-fi access can be offered to students. Using Tomizone to supplement your income during study is a brilliant easy to do concept that requires no labour from you on a daily basis!
  • Office Lobbies and Office Blocks are very popular. Especially in large buildings where there may be a coffee shop in the lobby with seating provided. As a property manager or a tenant, you may want to provide “public” Internet access for visitors. This is very popular with the likes of multi-tenanted office blocks where there are smaller offices.
  • Hospitals and Service Centres (such as mechanic workshops) can provide good revenues. Hospitals may have specific requirements with wireless devices, so make sure you find out the requirements and regulations and get permission. If wireless is not allowed, an effective cabled infrastructure can be put in place for rental laptops with a Tomizone acting as the gateway for people to pay and use the system.
  • Apartment Blocks are ideal for offering coverage to your neighbours who may not have Internet access already or wish to offer secure access to their tenants or guests. This is especially great if your apartment happens to be next door to a Hotel!

3: Provide a great environment

If you have tried using a laptop in the middle of the street, you can see how impractical it is! Provide an environment for a user to be seated comfortably and have access to electricity. Make sure also that your Internet Connection is good quality otherwise you risk getting a poor rating comment on your Tomizone Map Flag.

4: Have a good relationship with your Internet Service Provider (ISP)!

To ensure you are in control of the Internet use at your venue, have a good relationship with your ISP. Make sure you share information on how reliable their network is. Your ISP is a key partner to ensure you are sharing your broadband cost effectively and safely. Watch your ISP costs and if you need to, talk to them about how to upgrade your plan to provide even faster or better service.

5: Make sure you are knowledgeable to help

You need to know what you are talking about! When a customer uses your service, they are not expecting to know everything but they must at least have a level of skill on how to operate their wi-fi device. Get familiar with the way Tomizone works. Be aware that they must be in the coverage area of your Tomizone to use it! It's important that you use the service yourself and train anyone that is part of your team to understand how it works. It's simple and with a little bit of knowledge, you will appear to be a guru in the eyes of your customer. Users are sometimes unfamiliar with using their laptop outside of their home base, so be patient. Have the Tomizone User Brochure available for them to take away and read. Once they know how to use it, they'll be back for more!

6: Keep an eye on competing networks

Like a noisy neighbour having a party, be aware that there may be other wi-fi networks operating in your vicinity. The key here is to ensure you set your Tomizone to a radio channel where it's least likely to interfere with other networks and leave you some decent localised coverage. Boosting the signal is not really the best answer as it defeats the purpose - it is like turning up the music in the hope that your neighbour won't!

Be friendly with other wi-fi users in the neighbourhood and talk to them. Other things you can do could be to increase coverage through smart installation of antennae (see expanded coverage). You can also survey the area with a wireless laptop running net stumbler software. Either way, be considerate and people will have a great experience on your Tomizone.

7: Expand your coverage

If you want to expand your coverage for wi-fi with your Tomizone, put in some high power antenna or plug your Tomizone into a wired cable infrastructure in a building (like a hotel) and run further "dumb" access points off the wired infrastructure. See our set up tips for some guidence on these ideas.
